It’s Friday evening and I’m wiped out. Did I learn three things today? Of course!
- Older church buildings are a pain to keep up. A gentleman at my church in Garfield was fixing up some of the mortar between the bricks on the steeple at the church. Uh! Looking up at him as he worked made me very nervous. It just shows that older church buildings, with their character and all, are costly to upkeep.
- It’s the Friday of the start of Labor Day weekend. Gas prices are down from last year. You’d think with the incredible weather we’re having, people would be headed to the Shore to celebrate the unofficial end of the summer. While there may be some heading down to the Jersey beaches, traffic on this first day of the extended Labor Day weekend was insane all day. What did I learn from this? People still think they’re driving on a NASCAR track. Coming back to Garfield earlier today, taking the side roads instead of the Parkway or Route 17, I saw four cars pass others ahead of them on Farview in Paramus, just missing cars driving in the opposite direction. One person drove around a car to cut ‘em off in order to get into the parking lot of BJs Warehouse.
- I learned that changing fonts in the church bulletins can really mess up the layout. Not that I didn’t know that already, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so dramatic. We only changed from Helvetica to Merriweather (I’m on a serif kick). Nothing fit properly. Thankfully, it all worked out and we have normal bulletins for both Saint Matthew’s and Holy Trinity for Sunday.
